Blogpost 10: My Experience Blogging

Imagen
Hi, this is the final blogpost. You've made it! In this post, we are asking you to write about your experience blogging here in English. What have you learned? What have you enjoyed? How was the experience? Mention anything related to the topic that you want! Minimum number of words: 200 Since I am a teacher and not a student, my post will have a slightly different focus, but, still, I think it will interest you. Throughout this blogging experience, you've been doing a lot of writing. Writing is inherently different from speaking (and listening). Speaking takes place in real time; there is time pressure when you speak--which creates the kind of stress you feel. Writing is not so connected to time. In fact, when you write, you have time to reflect, think, and consider things. This makes the experience very different. Also, writing takes place in space. You tend to write on a flat surface; you use your eyes--and not your ears. Different senses are applied. When people write, ...

Blogpost 9: Themed Post

Imagen
In this post, a themed post, write about a topic that interests you. Minimum number of words: 190 A topic that I think is quite interesting is the evolutionary history of our planet. Over time, our Earth has been very different at different times. For instance, there was a period, I think it was called the "Ordovican" when life was still in the sea, and it was just coming onto land. Our atmosphere didn't have as much oxygen or carbon dioxide yet as now because plants were just beginning. The seas were dominated by a big variety of scorpions--sea scorpions. Some were as big as three meters in length. Fish had not yet evolved. Later, much of the land was covered in forests--very primitive types of trees that don't exist anymore. All these trees from that time--the Carboniferous Period are the coal we have today. We also experienced several moments of crisis and mass extinctions. One was during the late Permian Period. It lasted around 1 millions years (this crisis)...

Blogpost 8: A subject you enjoy studying

Imagen
Today's topic is a subject you enjoy studying this semester. You should say what the subject is and what it is about. You should say why you enjoy it, and what you've learned. Mention anything else you want to say. 180-word minimum. Since I'm not a student anymore, I'll have to tell you about a subject I enjoyed when in was a student. I arrived in Poland as an exchange student at the University of Warsaw in 1986, and in the first semester I had to study the Polish Language. It was three hours every day (there were other subjects too). Since I was so extremely motivated--probably freakishly so--I really loved it. I was inundated with grammar: verb forms and conjugations, noun declensions and cases (nominative, genetive, accusative, dative, instrumental, and the locative full of irregularities)...really it was a very grammar-oriented course. Normally, I would say that's not a great way to learn a language, but because I was in the country, I could immediately apply ...

Blogpost 7: Choice of two topics

Imagen
In this post, you have a choice of two topics. You can write about one of these two: Option 1: Write about a career-oriented website you enjoy visiting. You have to: - provide the link - describe the website (sections, features, etc) - say how often you visit the site - explain why you like the site. 170-word minimum Option 2: Write about an expert/person in your field that you admire. Say: -Who she/he is. (short biography) -What she/he has done. (examples of their work) -Why you like her/him. -Include his/her image 170-word minimum I am going to write about a linguist specialized in Language Acquisition--ESL: Stephen Krashen. He is a professor of Linguistics who has taught Linguistics and Education departments in the US. He received his PhD in 1972, and has been prolifically active in Linguistics Language Acquistion since then having published over 400 articles. I admire him mostly for certain theories that he has focused on, maybe even invented or created: The A...

Blogpost 6: Free Topic 2

Hi, in this post you can write about what you want. Write about something you have a strong opinion or notion about. Minimum: 150 words. I'd like to write about healthy eating habits or nutrition. I think this is a really interesting topic, as well as an important topic. Food is the basis of life. As time has gone on, I've become increasingly interested in the topic of diet. A few years ago, I read a book about sugar: its chemical composition, what it does to us, how we need it, how we don't need it, the sugar industry, and more... I've tried to let my life be influenced by the ideas of this book: Decrease refined sugar consumption as much as possible. Really, we can get all the sugar we need from fruit, some grains, and vegetables. Of course, the occasional chocolate, cake, or ice cream is nice, but these should be occasional treats. Overall, I believe the following: 1. Eat when you're hungry. Don't eat if you're not feeling at least some hunger. 2. ...

Blogpost 5: A Photo and its Story

Imagen
Hi, in this post you will choose a photo (picture) that is meaningful to you. It can be a family photo, or another kind of photo. Write abour why it interests you, what it means to you, and anything else you want to say. This post has a 150-word minimum. This is a photo of mom mom and grandmother taken in about 1944...so my mother was 2 years old. It was taken at a very bad time in history--during World War II. It was taken in Germany, so in the villain country in that part of history. At that time my grandfather was away in the war, and my grandmother was sometimes not sure if he was alive (he survived) because contact was often difficult. They had lost their apartment because of bombing in Hamburg, Germany about a year before, and they were living as refugees in the countryside, in a small village. My grandmother had to adjust to the new situation: living in a room belonging to other people who really didn't want her there. She had to go to the forest to chop down trees for w...

Blogpost 4: Free Topic

In this blogpost, we can write about any topic we want. The requirement is 140 words or more. I am going to write about climate change, or global warming since I've just read a book about it. The book was very informative, very realistic, and I suppose rather pessimistic. It's already too late to avoid the difficult changes. We have a choice: a world that heats up about 1,5 degrees, or 2, 3, or even 4. 4 would be extremely catastrophic, and could even lead to our (almost) extinction. We are already living in a world hotter than homo sapiens has ever experienced, so we are living in a world for which we don't have real experience. The future will just be more extreme: Rising sea levels. Miami, New York, Shanghai and other cities will probably be abandoned before 2100. Cataclysmic heat waves: There will soon be events of extreme heat with humidity (for example 50 degree humid weather) that will especially ravage India. Millions could die. Changing agriculture: There are...
